Crossref DOI deposit 5.4.0

Crossref metadata deposit schema 5.4.0

DOI deposits for Crossref: the doi_batch file that registers journal articles, books, conference papers, preprints and datasets

About

Publishers and their production vendors send Crossref a doi_batch file to register or update DOIs with their metadata: titles, contributors with ORCID iDs and ROR affiliations, funding, licences and reference lists. Abstracts are JATS, in the jats: namespace (see JATS 1.3).

Crossref accepts several versions of the schema. 5.4.0 is the newest one written in XML Schema 1.0. Version 5.5.0 (July 2026), which Crossref now recommends, adds XML Schema 1.1 assertions for contributor roles, which this validator cannot run.

Good to know

  • A file valid here can still be refused by Crossref's deposit system, which also checks the DOI prefix against the depositor, that the timestamp is newer than the last deposit, and other things a schema cannot see.
  • JATS, MathML and xml.xsd come from the copies Crossref ships with the schema; the two imports that pointed at w3.org now point at those copies.
  • The example is by xmlvalid.com and uses 10.5555, Crossref's test prefix.

The validator loads all of these with their folder structure, so includes and imports resolve as published
