Austrian e-invoice validator for e-Rechnung.gv.at

Check an invoice for the Austrian federal government before you send it to e-Rechnung.gv.at: ebInterface or Peppol BIS, against the schema and the checks the portal makes, with its error codes. Nothing is uploaded.

E-invoicing in Austria in short

Since 1 January 2014, suppliers of the Austrian federal government send structured e-invoices (§ 5 IKTKonG and the e-Rechnungsverordnung). They reach e-Rechnung.gv.at by upload or web service through the Unternehmensserviceportal (USP), or through Peppol. No signature is needed.

e-Rechnung.gv.at takes ebInterface, the Austrian XML invoice standard, in versions 4.3, 5.0, 6.0 and 6.1, which it recommends, and UBL such as Peppol BIS Billing 3.0. ebInterface is developed by the AUSTRIAPRO e-billing working group with the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ); version 7.0, bound to EN 16931, is planned for the end of 2026. Between businesses e-invoicing is not required; cross-border invoices between EU businesses become electronic by 1 July 2030, under the ViDA directive.

How to check an Austrian invoice

  1. Open the validator with e-Rechnung.gv.at (ebInterface 6.1), or the 6.0 one, for an invoice to the federal government. For an ebInterface invoice to anyone else, the plain ebInterface entries check the schema only.
  2. For a UBL invoice to the federal government, pick Austria e-Rechnung.gv.at Peppol Invoice or the credit note one.
  3. Paste the XML or drop the file, then press Validate.

What is checked

First the schema: for ebInterface its structure, required elements and data types; for Peppol BIS the UBL 2.1 schema, the EN 16931 rules and the Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 rules (3.0.21).

Then the checks e-Rechnung.gv.at makes before it accepts an invoice, with the codes the portal answers with. ebInterface publishes no business rules and the portal publishes no Schematron, so we wrote them after its requirements, its error list and its own version of the ebInterface schema: the order reference (AF-0010) in one of the forms the federal government uses (AF-0126), the order position of each line when it is an order number (AF-0055), the supplier number (EBI61-0012), the biller's e-mail address (EBI61-0002), a delivery date or period (AF-0082), the line, tax and invoice totals (AF-0089, AF-0084, AF-0076), discounts for early payment, the payment method, the IBAN and at most 999 lines.

Not checked: whether the supplier number and the buyer group exist in the federal accounting system, invoices sent before, attachments, and anything that depends on the day of upload, such as a due date in the past.

Questions

Is the invoice uploaded?

No. The schema check and the rules both run in your browser. Only the API and URL monitors validate on our servers.

Does a valid result mean e-Rechnung.gv.at will accept the invoice?

It means the invoice passes the schema and the portal's checks that need only the file. e-Rechnung.gv.at also looks the order reference and supplier number up in the federal accounting system, which this check does not.

What do codes like AF-0010 and EBI61-0012 mean?

They are the portal's error codes. EBI61 (EBI60 for ebInterface 6.0) are checks made when the portal reads the ebInterface file, AF checks are made on every invoice after that, whatever its format. Each code links to a page that explains it.

Which ebInterface versions are there?

ebInterface 6.1 and 6.0. e-Rechnung.gv.at also takes 4.3 and 5.0, which are not in the catalog; it stopped taking 4.0 to 4.2 in April 2022.

Can I check invoices from code?

Yes: the API and the command-line client with --schema at-erechnung-ebinterface-6.1, or --schema at-erechnung-peppol-invoice for Peppol.
