> Journal articles in JATS, the format PubMed Central, Crossref workflows and most scholarly publishers use.

JATS (ANSI/NISO Z39.96) tags the front matter, body and back matter of journal articles. This is the Journal Publishing ("blue") tag set, which PubMed Central accepts, in its MathML 3 variant.

- Type: DTD
- Version: 1.3
- Namespace: `No namespace (MathML and XLink inside)`
- Root element: `article`
- Publisher: NISO, NCBI (National Library of Medicine) (Public domain (work of the US Government)), source: https://jats.nlm.nih.gov/publishing/1.3/
- Validate against it: https://xmlvalid.com/validate?schema=jats-1.3

## Notes

- PubMed Central runs its own style checker on top of the DTD; its rules are not applied here.
- Character entities from the DTD are only known when the DTD is read while parsing; use character references for them.
