# Attribute name must be followed by the ' = ' character

> An attribute without a value.

The message, as Java reports it: `Attribute name "disabled" associated with an element type "input" must be followed by the ' = ' character.`

## Why it happens

- An HTML boolean attribute such as `disabled` or `checked` written without a value.

## How to fix it

- Give every attribute a value: `disabled="disabled"`, or whatever the format defines.
- Java's schema validation (`javax.xml.validation.Validator`, and JAXB or Spring on top of it) throws at the first error unless you set an `ErrorHandler` whose `error()` records the `SAXParseException` and carries on; each one has `getLineNumber()` and `getColumnNumber()`. A well-formedness error ends parsing whatever the handler does.

## The same problem in xmlvalid

libxml2, which xmlvalid validates with, reports it as [Specification mandates value for attribute](https://xmlvalid.com/errors/specification-mandates-value-for-attribute): `Specification mandates value for attribute disabled`

## Example that fails

```xml
<input disabled/>
```

## Fixed

```xml
<input disabled="disabled"/>
```
